Have you ever had problems getting someone to understand what you are trying to get across? You know that kind of stare they give you as if you’re off the planet?
Well, if you are not using their preferred language patterns you may as well be talking double Dutch.
This reminds me of when I was in Spain with my young family many years ago. I ordered us what I thought was baked beans on toast, but when our plate arrived we had broad beans and fried eggs! Hmmm, my Spanish is not as good as I thought! Sorry, I digress!
Anyway, what do I mean by preferred language patterns? Well, we all have a preferred language that we use – visual, auditory or kinesthetic (kinesthetic means touching or doing something).
I have taught many people in my People Skills courses (especially those in sales) how to listen out for these language patterns. The art of a sale is building fast rapport and understanding which language whomever you are talking to is using.
Let me give you an example. If you were talking to a photographer, chances are they would be a visual person and they would be using words such as “yes I see what you mean” or “I can imagine that myself”. Get the idea? An auditory person would be Have you ever had problems getting someone to understand what you are trying to get across? You know that kind of stare they give you as if you’re off the planet?! “yes that rings a bell” or “ that sounds fun.” Whereas a kinaesthetic person would talk about “getting the work done” or “that touched me deeply.”
Once you cotton onto these patterns, your sales will improve and so will your likability. Listening to people will feel they have known you for ages- and that builds trust.
I once showed someone on one of my courses how to reply to an email to a buyer at Waitrose supermarket they were trying to get to take their product; they had been trying to get on with this buyer for months and just couldn’t find common ground. After reading an email he had sent her, I showed her how to look for the language pattern he was using and showed her how to email back using his preferred language – she instantly got the deal!
